Social Peculiarities of Distance Learning

January 10th, 2008

The amount of people learning online persists to grow up as technologically online learning is improving. The biggest advantage of distance learning is the flexibility: most online students will have the chance to personalize their course and work as it fits them best. Moreover, distance learning is less expensive than usual education.

Online learning is also for people who like better to study autonomously, or who have full time jobs or families and don’t have an opportunity to attend a campus college. But on the other side online learners usually feel cut off from their school or classmates.

Still, there are some ways for online students to avoid that sense of loneliness:

  • Search for programs that engage group studies. If you need to uphold contact with classmates, you can easily do it. You can take the phone numbers of several classmates in order you have other ways of communication except e-mail or instant messaging. You will see that it’s important to hear a real voice.
  • Take benefit of the variety suggested by an online environment. Ask where your classmates are from. You may find a few friends with a radically different viewpoint. One of the benefits of distance learning is the accessibility – you may come across people from various countries, who lead completely different way of life.
  • You can also try to make contact with your teacher. Most online teachers are trained purposely for distance learning and can help you both to thrive in your course and get adjusted to online environment.
  • Join a distance students community or forum. There are no restrictions in classmates, or even students doing the same course. If you’re studying for a degree, doing an interest program, or improving your career skills, you still have the same situations as others online students. Perhaps members of a forum won’t help you with your tasks, but they surely are able to have compassion with your problems.
  • Get out! You’re extremely busy at the moment, with all your commitments. But still you should have some time for yourself to go out and have a rest. Meet with your friends, go to gym, and take your dog out. Don’t spend each waking minute gazing at a computer.
